Which batteries can be used with the next3?

As battery-based systems experts our design team is always trying to keep the battery compatibility as open as possible. The next3 has been designed to be fully compatible with lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries. Compatibility with other battery chemistries and technologies should be confirmed on a case by case. We are very keen to proof and validate our next3 with new battery technologies, please get in contact with us if you have a different battery technology that you would like to test with our device. Our xtender range is compatible with different battery technologies like redoxflow, saltwater, lithium-titanate, nickel-iron, nickel-cadmium and many more. Check with our support team for specific battery technologies.

The next 3 with lead-acid batteries

Please make sure that you have your battery manufacturer charge and discharge profiles and recommendations. During the first configuration assistance, you can define the battery profile () and battery capacity. This will configure a standard battery profile; we advise to go to the advanced configuration menu and make sure that the full charging and discharging profile matches with the recommendations from the battery manufacturer.

The next3 with lithium batteries

Lithium batteries have a different operation strategy, as they incorporate a battery management system (BMS) that is responsible for managing both the charging and discharging profiles. In terms of operation, there are two main types of lithium batteries: active lithium batteries with communication and passive lithium batteries without communication. 

The passive lithium batteries without communication will be configured as lead-acid batteries, and similarly we need to make sure that the configuration matches the recommendations from battery manufacturers. 

Most lithium batteries require communication between their BMS and the rest of the system for an optimal management of the battery (safety and lifetime), they are active lithium batteries. However, every battery uses its own specific protocol for communication. Studer has incorporated to the next3 a communication bridge between the BMS and the Studer bus (integrated CAN BMS). We have implemented several protocols for lithium battery management, making Studer products compatible with many lithium batteries.

How does it work? When the BMS is connected to the next3 it takes control over the battery management. The integrated CAN BMS will control and adjust the next3 configuration according to the information received from the BMS.

2. grid code compatibility

100% Offgrid, 100% ongrid

A grid-tied solution, 100% offgrid. The next3 is a full interactive grid inverter including an AC source interface with double disconnection relay with the grid. This input complies with the new grid-tied low voltage regulations in the UE and other regions. 

The list below summarizes the grid certificates that we have already obtained for different countries. These countries are therefore incorporated in the configuration assistant. The corresponding country should be selected during the first commissioning.
